Past Meetings
The Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) was founded in March of 1946 and held its first annual meeting in December of that year in Boston. We currently lack a record of subsequent annual meetings (but hope to develop this) until the SSE first met jointly with the American Society of Naturalists (ASN) in 1974. Prior to that the ASN had been meeting on its own, or in conjunction with other societies, since 1883. The Society of Systematic Biologists (SSB) was founded in 1951 and had been meeting on its own, or in conjunction with other societies, until it first joined the SSE and ASN in 1989 to create the tri-society annual conference that has occurred annually ever since.
We are building a historical record of past meetings, including programs (pdfs are linked via the location names below). Because the ASN and SSB have fairly complete records of their meetings, the list below uses the annual meeting of the SSE as its basis, indicating when additional societies joined them. If you have additional information, corrections for the list below, or a copy of a past program that is missing and would be willing to donate it for scanning, please let us know. The records become incomplete and sometimes contradictory as recently as the 1980s.
Starting in 2021, some recorded presentations from the conferences can be watched on the Evolution Meetings Youtube Channel. Links in location names will download an archived program. Programs post-2019 can be found on the archived website.
