SSB Mayr (virtual talks only) and SSE Hamilton (virtual talks only) awards
Students who are members of the Society for the Study of Evolution may be eligible to apply for the SSE's Hamilton Award. Students who are members of the Society of Systematic Biologists may be eligible to apply for the SSB's Ernst Mayr Award. Both awards can be applied for during talk submission. Abstract submission deadline for both of these awards is April 15, 2024. Consult the society pages linked above for eligibility criteria.
How to Apply
The SSE Hamilton Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Presentation will be given to a current or very recent graduate student who presents an outstanding talk based on their graduate work at the meeting. Finalists will present their talks during the Hamilton Award symposium during the virtual part of the meeting June 27-28, 2024. Applicants must check a box during virtual abstract submission indicating their interest in the Hamilton Award and submit an abstract. Apply by April 15, 2024.
The Ernst Mayr Award is given to the presenter of the outstanding student talk in the field of systematics. Mayr competition finalists will present their talks during the Mayr Award Symposium during the virtual part of the meeting, June 27-28, 2024 Applicants must check a box during virtual abstract submission indicating their interest in the Mayr Award and submit an abstract. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO May 3, 2024.
Talk sign-up is only accessible after your conference registration is complete. An abstract is required when applying for an award competition, but you can sign up early to reserve a talk and then return to the abstract submission site to update your abstract and other details closer to the submission deadline.
If your application is successful for one of these two Awards, you will present your talk during either the Hamilton or Mayr Award symposium. If your application is not successful, your talk will be scheduled during normal concurrent sessions during the virtual conference. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in mid-May.

This award was established in 2012 to recognize a student member of the American Society of Naturalists who has presented an outstanding poster at the annual meeting. Student members (in-person attendees only) can indicate their eligibility for this award if they submit a poster before the deadline of June 21, 2024. Ruth Patrick was a renowned limnologist, past president of the ASN (1975), and a Lifetime Honorary Member of the society. Students will be asked to indicate their eligibility for this award during the poster submission process. Poster submission is only available after your main registration has been completed.
