SSB Mayr (virtual and in-person talks) and SSE Hamilton (virtual talks only) awards
Students who are members of the Society for the Study of Evolution may be eligible to apply for the SSE's Hamilton Award. Students who are members of the Society of Systematic Biologists may be eligible to apply for the SSB's Ernst Mayr Award. Both awards can be applied for during talk submission. Consult the society pages linked above for deadlines and eligibility criteria.
How to Apply
The SSE Hamilton Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Presentation will be given to a current or very recent graduate student who presents an outstanding talk based on their graduate work at the meeting. Finalists will present their talks during the Hamilton Award symposium during the virtual part of the meeting June 27-28. The application to become a Hamilton award finalist is part of registration for the meeting. Applicants must check a box during virtual abstract submission indicating their interest in the Hamilton Award and submit an abstract. Apply by [date].
The Mayr competition is running virtual and in-person components. Either way, those planning to apply should sign up early, ticking the relevant box while submitting their talk that indicates they would like to be considered. For in-person talks, choose 'regular concurrent', not 'symposium' or 'award' as your talk-type. Do this early because once talk slots fill it will no longer be possible to apply for these awards, even if it is prior to the submission deadline. Talk sign-up is only accessible after your conference registration is complete. An abstract is required when applying for an award competition, but you can sign up early to reserve a talk and then return to the registration site to update your abstract and other details closer to the submission deadline.
Mayr Deadline(s):
If your application is successful, you will present your talk during either Hamilton (virtual) or Mayr (virtual or in-person) award symposium. The virtual Mayr symposia will be during the 2 day virtual conference; the in-person symposia will take place [date]. If your application is not successful, your talk will be scheduled during normal concurrent sessions. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in mid-May.
