SSB Mayr and SSE Hamilton talk awards
Students who are members of the Society for the Study of Evolution may be eligible to apply for the SSE's Hamilton Award (deadline May 1, 2022). Students who are members of the Society of Systematic Biologists may be eligible to apply for the SSB's Ernst Mayr Award (deadline May 1, 2022). Both awards can be applied for during talk submission. Consult the society pages linked above for eligibility criteria.
How to Apply - The Hamilton competition is open to in-person talks only, while the Mayr competition is running virtual and in-person components. Either way, those planning to apply should sign up early for either a faux-live talk (to enter the virtual Mayr competition) or for an in-person talk (to enter the in-person Mayr or Hamilton competitions), ticking the relevant box to indicate you want to be considered. For in-person talks, choose 'regular concurrent', not 'symposium' or 'award' as your talk-type. Do this early because, if talks fill, it will no longer be possible to apply for these awards, even if it is prior to the May 1 deadline. Talk sign-up is only accessible after your conference registration is complete. An abstract is required when applying for an award competition, but you can sign up early to reserve a talk and then update your abstract and other details closer to the May 1 deadline.
If your application is successful, you will present your talk during either Hamilton (in-person) or Mayr (virtual or in-person) award symposium. The virtual Mayr symposia will be during the 2 day virtual conference; the in-person symposia will take place on Saturday, June 25th. If your application is not successful, your talk will be scheduled during normal concurrent sessions. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in mid-May.
